Hi there..

 

True indeed, schwarz ( means black in color as well) does mean without
money.

I guess my german is ok, but that's only coz I am bloody german ! :-)

According to an article in Wikipedia, the use of 'schwartz' in Skat comes
from it's meaning of 'poor, without money' in an old Germanic Gypsy language
called Rotwelsch.  A couple of articles I found on Google seem to back this
up, although my German isn't good enough to be sure.

 

I wondered if anyone else had come across this.
