Hi Akram!

I let several of my students in your area know about the conference. I think it is great that conferences of different shapes and sizes are happening all across the country (not everyone can make it to GDC). I've found that www.gamedev.net is one of the best places for people to go to who are interested in events like this.

Good to hear from you again Erin :0)

A piece of advice for students to be inserted in the packet:

Many students discover after a few years what their field is really like,
and decide that it is not for them. You might want to consider then
general reputation of the school, and the availability of possible
alternative majors.

An interesting article on academic uses for twitter. It didn't convince me,
but it was an interesting read! ;)

To be fair to Susan, I was actually tasked with bringing the "Breaking In" site up to date last year. It was paused due to the general IGDA website update and then I was delayed with?Global Game Jam. I would love to take on the project again this Summer, and even put a call out for volunteers over on the student-action list (who are, ironically, discussing the same exact thing as we are over here :).
?
As I mentioned earlier, to me that *is* the solution: educate the prospective students and parents about the industry and about choosing a school. Empower them to make the right decisions, and (hopefully) predatory schools will find it much harder to attract talent. I'm willing to put some effort into the content and design, but I do need some help on the Web/implementation side of things. If any of you are willing to help (or have students who would like to), I'd love to hear from you off-list about it.
?

All the recent posts on "those" programs and the all the "other" evil schools/administrators are entertaining, but I'm not sure who they're aimed at.? Are there members of those schools subscribed to this list?? If so, they must have thick skin to take all this venting.? (And is it just my imagination, or does this thread happen every year following GDC?)

It doesn't appear that anyone is proposing real, concrete actions to improve the situation.? I think it's inappropriate for this group to publish a list of predatory schools, and problematic to list schools that are AOK (the specter of the IGDA stamp of approval).? What is appropriate is to present a list of what students and parents should look for: positives and warning signs.? Do we have something like this and I've just missed it?? I wasn't able to locate it on the SIG site.

Breaking In
I'm embarrassed to say that I just noticed the IGDA Breaking In site: http://www.igda.org/breakingin/ , and I have no idea how old it is.? It appears to be meant to encourage students to get into the industry, but there's no real guidance of any kind for choosing a good school (at least that I could find).?

Can I propose that we try to add some education advice to this site, and then all work to link to that location from our program sites?? That would raise the chances of students finding the site (through a better Google rating based on our traffic) and avoiding some of these predators.? FIEA has a list of questions for prospective students to ask: http://www.fiea.ucf.edu/shield/showpage.php?page_id=1007 , and I liked it so much that we made our own version: http://gamedev.depaul.edu/?page_id=38? I'm sure many schools have their own versions.

Maybe something like this could help the situation, and we'll have less to gripe about next year.? :)

Scott

In addition to Jeff Ward's article, I like to point to Tom Sloper's site for
a wealth of information, some of which has specifically to do with the
question of going to a "game school" or a "regular" university, and on
evaluating schools:

http://www.sloperama.com/advice/lesson44.htm

I can also say that, having spoken to and spoken with some of the Westwood
students (as Sean came here to defend), they're very sharp and certainly of
a caliber with game students I've met from other programs. One from the
group I spoke with last year contacted me recently with news that he'd
gotten his first job in the industry (I'd referred him to a couple of
places). I think, in a way, that having to make up for the crummy
commercials has forced a quality increase (hi Sean ;) ).

Thanks for the suggestion Erin. Tom Sloper's site is quoted frequently by students on the Game Career Guide's forums, so I think he's doing a great service that's having an effect. I'll try to contact him for input on this as well. Linking to sources like his will be helpful, and more evidence that a central source would help.

Dan and I are going to work on the basics and then come back to the group for input. Along the way if any of you have ideas and suggestions please pass them along to us directly and we'll try to fit everything in.

Hello All,
I just wanted to take a moment to let everyone know about the Oklahoma Electronic Game Expo this Saturday April 11, 2009.
The expo was put together by myself and my game design students.

The goal of the event is to highlight the game industry and other computer art industries such as web, graphic and multimedia design, as well as computer animation, within Oklahoma. The industry in Oklahoma is very limited right now, we hope to highlight the opportunities Oklahoma has for developing and growing such industries and the degree programs that help develop a workforce for that industry.

The event is free and open to the public and will be held at the Oklahoma City Community College. There will be several exhibitors and several guest speakers throughout the day.

For more information visit: http://oege.catblog.occc.edu/wordpress/
