I don't know that this would be an answer for all of the 3D art students,
but showing them how scripting languages will be useful to them in their
career in game production could be useful.

One resource to direct students toward would be tech-artists.org The
instructors might not have the chops, but interested students could develop
the expertise with the help of the community.

Also, a good example of the power of scripting comes from Bioware tech
artist, Ben Cloward's, portfolio:

This example demonstrates how a 2 day intensive character rigging process
was automated over time, allowing him more time to work on using the rig to
produce quality animation.
