[game_edu] Suggestions for Free Unreal Source Control ?

I hit upon a few different issues on this topic ...

-----

Here's the UDN page specifically for Source Control.
http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/SCCIntegration.html

>From the document:

"UnrealEd doesn't know (or care) which SCC you use as long as it exports the proper programming interface."
Unfortunately, what the proper interface is not explained or detailed.

At the bottom is "Advanced Integration", which provides a guide for another source control system and suggest that others could follow this route.

------

We're talking about Source Control from within the editor. Ultimately, if you're using SVN, then you're ignoring the UnrealEd functionality and the hassle to get it working in the editor all together in favor of your SVN client of choice.

SVN behaves well once you get past the initial hurdle of submitting the all of the files into the repository for the first time.

More times than not, I've been on projects (Academic and Commercial) where the artist sucked it up and learned how to use source control directly.

The basics can be handled in a lecture, and ultimately it's better for your students to ask "What's the source control interface you're using?" than "What is Source Control?" when they get their first jobs.

As far as I'm aware, UDK's support for version control is limited to Perforce - and it doesn't look like there are many (if any) Perforce hosting providers out there. That said, there's an interesting thread on StackOverflow ( http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2397642/online-perforce-repositories ) that suggests that running your own Perforce server on Amazon EC2 might be feasible.

Back when I was a student we used Assembla for one of the projects I ran. It was a useful website for managing the project we were working on and it offers free SVN and GIT.

Hi:

I am teaching a class on Game Engines and we are currently learning to use the Unreal GDK. It turns out that the GDK includes a feature to use Source Contro (you have to turn it on, but it's there)l, which would be really great to use. However, I need a free source control host to get this to work. Does anyone out there have any recommendations? As usual, there is no money and very little time, but it would be a really good experience- dealing with source control has been a big hole in our curriculum and this is a way to get it.

Thanks!
