I have found these useful:
Homo Ludens by Johan Huizinga
Man, Play and Games by Roger Caillois
An Introduction to Game Studies by Frans Mayra
The first two are particularly thought-provoking, but can be challenging
for students who believe anything written more than 2 years ago is
hopelessly out of date and irrelevant. ;-)
And I would avoid this one:
Handbook of Computer Game Studies by Joost Raessens
